Community Involvement Hours
Every student who begins secondary school in Ontario is required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement in order to receive a diploma. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community and to help develop a greater sense of belonging within their community.
We encourage students to fulfill this requirement as soon as possible after starting high school. As an incentive, Grade 9 students who earn at least 40 hours of community involvement prior to the end of their first year of high school will be honoured at the Fall Awards Assembly and will receive a special certificate and gift.
NEW INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2020-21
For students graduating in the 2020-21 school year, the requirement has been adjusted to a minimum of 20 hours.
All Students in the 2020-21 School Year
More flexible options are available for community involvement hours. At the principal’s discretion:
Students may be allowed to earn hours during the time allotted for the school day, or duties normally performed in the home. Examples include walking a younger child to and from school, helping younger siblings with schoolwork.
Students aged 14 or older can count a maximum of 10 hours from paid employment. Students counting paid employment will be required to complete a reflection exercise indicating how their work contributed to the service for others.
ALL SECORD STUDENTS SHOULD CHECK THEIR GRADE D2L CLASSROOM UNDER ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR UPDATED COMMUNITY SERVICE HOUR INFORMATION.
All students must use the online system called Hour Republic to submit community involvement hours.
